Opus Magnum · Chapter VI

The Green Lion

In alchemy the Green Lion is a raw, burning solvent. Its famous picture shows it devouring the Sun: it dissolves gold.

Eat every grain of gold. Take the Caduceus to turn the Salamanders back to the furnace.

Arrow keys or WASD. On a phone, swipe, or tap on the side you want to go. Esc pauses.

Why a lion eats the sun

The Green Lion devouring the Sun is one of the best-known pictures in alchemy, printed in the Rosarium Philosophorum in 1550. Green meant raw and unripe. The lion was a strong solvent, and the Sun was gold. The picture says: this liquid dissolves gold.

The Salamander is the spirit that lives in fire. Here the Salamanders guard the athanor, the furnace in the middle of the maze, and chase the Lion. The Caduceus, the staff of Mercury, balances fire with its opposite. When the Lion holds it, the fire is tame for a few seconds.

The second round is red, the colour of Rubedo, the last stage of the work.

  1. Arrow keys or WASD move the Lion. On a phone, swipe or tap on the side you want to go.
  2. Each grain is worth 10. The Sun by the furnace is worth 300.
  3. A Caduceus makes the Salamanders pale and slow for seven seconds. Catch them for 200, 400 and 800. When all four are used, a new one appears in a far corner.
  4. A Salamander that catches the Lion puts out one of three fires. Then the Lion has two safe seconds.
  5. The side corridors in the middle row lead through to the other side.
