The Flight of the Egg
Keep the Philosopher's Egg flying between the pillars of the furnace. Gather fire until it hatches, then fly the Phoenix to the Sun. About a minute and a half.
Opus Magnum · Chapter II
The Flight of the Egg
Alchemists sealed their matter in a glass egg and kept it in steady heat for weeks. Too close to the fire and it cracks. Too far and it goes cold.
Fly between the pillars. Gather fire. Hatch the Phoenix and reach the Sun.

Why an egg flies
The Philosopher's Egg was the alchemist's sealed flask: matter went in, the neck was melted shut, and the egg sat in the athanor, a furnace built to hold one even heat for weeks. Too much heat cracked the glass. Too little stopped the work.
Sublimatio is the stage where what is heavy turns volatile and rises. Here the Egg rises when you beat its wings and sinks toward the furnace when you stop. The pillars carry the signs of fire, water, air and earth.
When enough fire has been gathered, the egg opens and the Phoenix comes out: the bird that burns and is born again from its ash. Its flight ends at the Sun, the alchemists' sign for gold.
- Hold your finger, the mouse button or Space and the Egg rises. Let go and it sinks slowly. A short tap gives one beat of the wings.
- Each fire spark you fly through adds gold and brings the hatching closer.
- Hitting a pillar or the furnace puts out one of three fires. Lose all three and the game ends.
- Five clean pillars in a row double your gold, ten triple it.
- The Phoenix rises from its ash once. Then it flies on to the Sun.
